Alcatel unveils three new devices including a bezel-less phone Alcatel 5 at CES 2018, yesterday. The other two devices shown are Alcatel 1x and Alcatel 3v both having 18:9 aspect display. The details about the technical specifications are still largely missing at this moment. These will be heard next month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The French-Chinese smartphone maker shared its new design philosophy with the world with the presentation.

In its press release, Alcatel writes that TCL Communication continues to commit itself to launching new smartphones under the Alcatel brand in 2018 as well. Is the name TCL familiar to you? That could be right. The technology company from China has similar agreements with BlackBerry. TCL is responsible for the design, production, and distribution of new Alcatel and BlackBerry phones.

We already knew Alcatel had plans for new smartphones thanks to Evan Blass. The American tech journalist already circulated a picture a few weeks ago revealing the Alcatel plans for 2018. Then three new devices leaked were the Alcatel 1, Alcatel 3 and Alcatel 5. The phone leaker had it right again. Exactly these devices were shown on Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

All an 18: 9 display

Unfortunately, we are not sure what goes under the bonnet. The goal of the presentation was to show consumers and the media the new design of their phones. Information about the specifications will only be announced at the end of February or the beginning of March when the MWC (Mobile World Congress) is held in Barcelona.

What the Alcatel 1x, Alcatel 3v and Alcatel 5 have in common is that they all have 18: 9 aspect ratio displays. Though all of these have 18:9 aspect ratio the bezels are still not small as you may have seen on other fullscreen phones. The Alcatel 5, however, has very minimal bezels on the sides and the bottom. The design is also radically changed from the rest of the unveiled phones. 18:9 aspect ratio became a design trend in 2017 and we saw mostly on the expensive flagships like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, HTC U11 Plus, and iPhone X. We also saw some examples in the middle range, but those were just a few. It looks like 2018 will be all about the 18:9 aspect ratio.

According to Alcatel’s new design philosophy, every device has an 18:9 ratio display, regardless of the price tag. And that is not for nothing. Christian Gatti, Global President of the Alcatel Business Division and Executive Vice President at TCL Communication, articulates it as follows:

As the international smartphone market continues to evolve, we have arrived in a new year where we find it necessary to stabilize and transform our smartphone portfolio in order to serve our customers better and seize the opportunities that lie ahead. By modernizing the design of our smartphones and profiling ourselves as the first smartphone manufacturer in the world where 18: 9 is the standard for the entire collection, we are able to re-focus and make features of flagships accessible to virtually all consumers worldwide.

As we said before, the new line-up consists of three different models. We will get to hear a lot of details soon, but thanks to hands-on videos that we have encountered on the internet, we already know a few things about the devices.
