Google is getting better at recognizing malicious apps in the Play Store. Thanks to the combination of machine learning and many statistics, some 700,000 unwanted apps were removed in 2017.

The Google Play Store is known for an open nature. It is not difficult for developers to market their applications through Google’s policies. This has the disadvantage that many malicious apps are also listed in the Play Store. Google now announces that it has removed 700,000 potentially dangerous apps last year and that is 70 percent more than in 2016.

Malicious apps appear in different forms in the Play Store. There were many apps that pretended to be well-known apps. 250,000 of these types of apps were removed. There are also trends to be observed in the way the apps work. This year many applications were found that tried to use your phone to mine Bitcoins. In previous years it was popular to offer apps that then let you install malware.

Progress

Google has become increasingly better at intercepting malicious apps over the years, but the developers of malicious apps are not sitting still either. New ways are always found to get their software in the Play Store. Google estimates the chance to download a malicious app now at 0.00006 percent.

Since the start of Google Play, a lot of statistics have been collected and in recent years machine learning has been combined with this data, Google has become much more effective in recognizing malicious apps. The head of Google Play Protect , Dave Kleidermacher, indicates that despite the small chance of installing bad apps it is still possible that you install them on your phone. When users give permission to share data with this kind of apps, Google can do little about this. He indicates that Google sees this as a task to make its users more aware in this area.
