10 Most Anticipated Upcoming Open World Games 2017 (PC, Xbox One, PS4)

15: Agents of Mayhem

Release Date: 2017
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

At the No. 15 spot, we have Agents of Mayhem. It’s an open world action-adventure third-person shooter video game set in the Saints Row universe. Agents of Mayhem is a spin-off of the Saints Row series taking place after the retreat earth ending of Saints Row Get Out of Hell. Game’s plot revolves around an organization known as Mayhem whose goal is to stop the terrorist organization Legion from destroying the world’s nations. The game takes place in a futuristic version of Seoul, South Korea built as ‘the city of tomorrow’. The players control three agents at a time with the ability to switch between them at will. There are 12 total agents to choose from. Each of them has their own unique play style and abilities. Some of these agents include fortunate Colombian former sky pirate Hardtack (a united states navy chief petty officer), Hollywood, an actor and proclaimed face of Mayhem, and Rama (Indian monologist). We also have some other characters that we don’t know much about yet Kingpin Yeti, Ainy Braddock, Daisy Red Card, and Jewel.

I have to admit, it is awesome to see Volition back. It’s gonna be fun to see what they can put together with Agents of Mayhem. I already can see some of the parodies that they’ll have within the game, some of the ties to over watching Grand Theft Auto 5. They make some of the more enjoyable and fun open-world games out there so, I’m really intrigued to see what they’re gonna put together and so far it looks like it’s gonna be a lot of fun. Although this is still in the Saints Row universe, it seems like they’re gonna have more creative freedom so maybe they will make another gem like Saints Row 3 or Saints Row 4.

13: Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

Release Date: TBA
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

At the No. 913 spot, we have Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. It’s medieval action role-playing game being developed by TaleWorlds Entertainment. Tthe game is a prequel, 200 years before the events of Mount & Blade Warband. It takes place during the decline of the Calradian Empire and the formation of the kingdoms that appear in the previous games. The armor, weapons, and architecture will draw inspiration from 600 to 1100A.D. Bannerlord will include at least six major factions each composed of competing clans with their own goals as well as minor Warband factions like mercenaries. With Mount & Blade:  Warband just coming to the Xbox One and PS4, you have to expect the Mount & Blade: Bannerlord 2 will be making a console release.

The big thing about the Mount & Blade franchise was that the previous games never really had any graphical highlights or even some of the gameplay. It was just a lot of fun playing with other people and some of the elements that came together to make an ultimate role-playing experience. We’ve seen a lot of gameplay so far, a lot of highlights of the siege mode, and the AI has gotten better and the worlds feel like they’re more full. That’s what I love about this game so far. They’ve been working on this for years now. They’re taking their time. Hopefully, we’ll be getting a release date soon as they have just recently launched the steam page for Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. Either way, I’m pumped for this and I’m glad that Taleworlds is taking their time and they’re going to deliver an amazing experience for everybody.

12: Days Gone

Release Date: TBC
Platforms: PlayStation 4

At number twelve spot, we have Days Gone. It’s an open world action-adventure survival horror video game in development by SEI Bend Studio. It’s played from a third-person perspective and players will be controlling Deacon St. John, a drifter and former bounty hunter who prefers to live a dangerous life on the road, or living in wilderness encampments.

The game takes place two years after global pandemic occurred which killed almost all humanity, returned millions of others in the freakers (mindless zombie-like creatures) that are quickly evolving. Players are allowed to use multiple ways to complete objectives such as utilizing stuff for silent takedowns or taking the aggressive approach by using long and short ranged weapons. Dynamic day-night cycles also feature in the game which makes freakers weak and slow during the day but fast and aggressive during the night. Vehicles such as motor bikes can be used to explore the game’s open world. Players are also able to craft new items to improve combat efficiency.

This title was one of the biggest surprises coming out of E3 2016. We got quite a bit out of it. We got to see some amazing gameplay and we also got introduced to our main character who seems like a very badass character. Kind of reminds me of Daryl Dixon from the Walking Dead at least based on his appearance. But there’s a lot of questions about this story. What it’s going to be about. Obviously, it’s going to be surviving against the zombie-like creatures. There’s another bigger question and it’s the surviving humans that are around him. There seems to be some type of human presence that is against him so I am interested in knowing who they are and why do they not like this guy. Obviously, maybe it’s just surviving but he also has some type of loved ones so maybe that takes a role in all this.

Either way, it’s gonna be fun to see how all that plays out and also seeing how the gameplay is because there seems to be a lot of ways that we’re gonna be able to take down these enemies either stealthily or even going after them with the action-packed way which is shooting all these enemies down. But obviously, there may be consequences with that and at this point, there’s a lot of questions about what we’re going to be getting with Days Gone. I’m sure we’re going to be getting a lot more answers in the next coming months. But so far, they’ve got us hyped up for this.

11: State of Decay 2

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

At the  No. 11 position, we have State of Decay 2. It’s a survival video game being developed by Undead Labs. It is said to be a bigger, better, bolder, smoother, State of Decay that you can play with your friends. The world is more dangerous and unpredictable than ever so if you choose you can work closely with up to three other players to build lasting communities and put your survival plan to the test. As with the original game, your choices will shape the interconnected world and form a unique experience every time you play.

Dynamic game systems for character progression, base building, leadership promotion, and consequence driven storytelling will result in a dramatic experience that tests your will to survive. Throughout the game, you’ll explore a visually stunning and Rich detailed world brought to life with the Unreal Engine 4. Now, as I have stated in the past, I felt like this game got stepped on by way too many people. It was a very fun zombie game and I’m really intrigued to see what type of improvements and new features  they will be including and also progressing the story and seeing what exactly happened after leaving Trumbull Valley and switching from the CryEngine to the Unreal Engine 4 will bring a much better graphical experience and it will make exploring the zombie infested world just a little bit better.

10: Spider-Man

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4

At the No. 10 spot, we have Spider-Man. It’s an open world action-adventure video game based on the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man. It’s being developed by insomniac games. The game will tell an entirely new story about Spider-Man and is not tied to any film or comic book. The game will cover both the Peter Parker and Spider-Man aspects of the character and will feature a more experienced Spider-Man. The game will take place in an open-world New York City. Players will be able to use Spider-Man’s well-known abilities such as web-slinging and wall-crawling as well as new gameplay elements unseen in previous Spider-Man games. One of the new gameplay elements will be the ability to traverse using parkour.

Spider-Man 2 in the PS2 days was so much fun that’s why I’m excited to see what Insomniac Games has for us. I have heard, we’re gonna have an experienced Spider-Man who’s been through some things. That’s very interesting because we have not seen that before. It always seems to be this high school Spiderman who is just going through puberty. Maybe that means Uncle Ben does not have to die again or it’s just a flashback. Now that this game is not being tied to any film or comic book I’m gonna be looking to see what type of characters will be featured. Will we see Mary Jane as the love interest? Will Jonah Jameson still be Spider-Man’s boss or be featured? If he is in the game, please bring JK Simmons to take his role. He is born for it, and in terms of villains will we see Venom or maybe a character that we haven’t seen before? There’s a lot of characters in the Marvel Universe that I would love to see Spider-Man face off with. Either way, this game has a great potential and it will be cool to see if we get more superhero games like this in the future.

8: Hunt Showdown

Release Date: TBC
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Hunt Showdown is a survival or a multiplayer video game in development to be published by Crytek. In this tense match based first-person player-versus-player monster hunter from the makers of Crysis, you will face off against unearthly horrors and the forgotten corners of the world. You will hunt and you will die but without risk, there can be no reward. When the water runs with blood you better hope it’s not your own.

We’ve only seen a small look at this game so far but at E3 Hunt Showdown received critical acclaim receiving Destructoid, Game Informer, and PC Gamers Best of E3 Award. IGN also described the game as an intricate blend of survival, shooter, team exploration, and dynamic open-world horror with just a pinch of roguelike RPG thrown in to boot. Originally this was intended to be a spiritual successor to Darksiders. This game has endured a long and crazy development but I think we all have to admit what we’ve been shown thus far looks exciting. It definitely is a title to keep your eyes on.

7: The Crew 2

Release Date: Q1, 2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

The Crew 2 is a racing video game developed by Ivory Tower and published by Ubisoft. In The Crew 2, players assume control of a relatively unknown racer who’s trying to work his way to become successful in multiple disciplines. It features a persistent open-world for racing and free roaming across a scaled-down recreation of the United States. In addition to cars, players can also control other kinds of vehicles including planes, motorcycles, and boats. Each vehicle has their own control physics meaning that gameplay is different when players are controlling different types of vehicles.

The game features four different hub worlds with each having their own theme and play style. These themes include off-road street racing and pro racing. Freestyle vehicle customization will also be featured within the game. I really do like what I’m seeing with the Crew 2 as polygon has noted anything with an engine is going to be racing in the Crew 2. Airplanes, dirt bikes, boats, and high-performance sports cars will also be featured. Obviously, this game isn’t trying to be too realistic but I do feel like the new somewhat extreme features look like a lot of fun along with a much more free world to race in.

6: Red Dead Redemption 2

Release Date: Q2,2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

At the No. 6 spot, we have Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s an open-world Western action-adventure third-person shooter video game being developed by Rockstar Games. It is said to be an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland. The game’s vast and Atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience. Not much is known about Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve seen the poster of the game, we’ve also seen a trailer briefly showing off the beautiful open world that Rockstar Games has created for us.

This title has had some very convincing leaks one of those being the leaked world map. A lot of the landmarks seen in this trailer connect to the locations on this map. What also can be found on this map is that we see parts of Red Dead Redemption returning such as tall trees in the Great Plains. We also have huge amounts of water such as some lakes and rivers which make you think that we will be having the ability to use boats and possibly swim.  It’s gonna be a lot of fun to finally get a Rockstar game.

5: Star Citizen

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Linux

Now, at the number five spot, we have Star Citizen. It’s a space video game for PC being developed by cloud Imperium games. It is planned to consist of four main components first-person space combat, mining, exploration, and trading with first-person shooter elements in a massively multiplayer persistent universe. The game will include customizable private servers and drop in a cooperative multiplayer campaign titled Squadron 42. It’s being directed by Chris Roberts who’s best known for Wing Commander of which Squadron 42 is actually its spiritual successor. The storyline centers on the elite military unit and involves the player-character enlisting the United Empire Earth Navy taking part in a campaign that starts with a large space battle. The game is planned to be released in multiple chapters and Squadron 42 will include Hollywood talent playing characters. Some are Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong, Julie Anderson, Andy Serkis and a few more.

The game will also feature persistent universe module which will allow players to explore the open world that has been created. This is already been one of the biggest games of all time and it’s only getting better and better. There are some things that they do need to improve on such as the first person shooter element. But looking at this game, thus far it looks absolutely magnificent from a graphical perspective. It looks beautiful and all the features, modules included make this game being one of the biggest games of all time. Eventually, we’re going to get all the pieces interconnected and finally, Star Citizen will be complete. Hopefully, from there on they’ll be updating the game adding cooler and newer features.

 4: Anthem

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Anthem is an open-world action role-playing video game being developed by Bioware. In Anthem, players will assume the role of a freelancer one of a group of bold and courageous people who leave their civilization to explore a lush and dangerous landscape. Fully customizable exosuits called Javelins can be customized to have various unique weapons and superhuman abilities.

There were two classes of javelins shown during Anthem’s presentation at Microsoft’s E3 conference. One was the Ranger, which is an all-around and balanced javelin and the Colossus which is a larger and more heavily armored javelin made to fill in more of a tanking role. The game is a shared world cooperative multiplayer game that can have up to four squad members per team. Teams can fight savage beasts and ruthless Marauders while exploring lost ruins and experiencing massive world altering terrain occurrences such as shaper storms. Following Mass Effect Andromeda, this is Bioware’s next title which at least to me feels like Crysis and Destiny put together. The world looks fast and the combat looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

3: Shadow of The Colossus

Release Date: Q1,2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4

Shadow of the Colossus is an action-adventure video game being published by Sony. It was revealed at E3 that Shadow of the Colossus was being remade as it did release originally in 2005 and it is said to be coming early next year. The original synopsis of this game was a man named Wander attempts to bring a maiden who was sacrificed back to life by defeating a series of colossal stone creatures so that a magical being named Dortmund will revive her. The game takes place in a fantasy setting with mostly game’s events occurring within a vast and unpopulated Peninsula known as the Forbidden Land. The Forbidden Land has been separated from the outside world by a mountainous range to its north and sea to the south and east.

This remake is led by BluePoint who developed the earlier PlayStation remaster. Developers remade all the game’s assets from the ground up but otherwise retained the same gameplay from the original title along with the introduction of a new controller scheme. The original game director provided a list of recommended changes to Bluepoint for the remake but he did say that he does believe that most of them will not be implemented nor would they add any of the colossi that had been cut from the original game. This is regarded by some as one of the greatest games of all time and I’m extremely excited for this remake. It seems that most the elements from the original game aren’t being messed with which is great.

2: Death Stranding

Release Date: TBA
Platforms: PlayStation 4

Death Stranding is an action open-world video game being developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony. It runs on the Decima engine which was last used for Guerrilla games Horizon Zero Dawn. This will bring Hideo Kojima’s next journey to life. Very little is known thus far about the story other than Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen will portray leading characters in the game through motion capture facial scanning and vocal performance. While director Gilmor Del Toro will also contribute his likeness to another character through facial and body scanning.

A female protagonist is also planned to be revealed later on. Kojima has compared the gameplay to that of recent AAA games like Uncharted or The Division just with a healthy dose of that trademark Kojima flare. Kojima also describes Death Stranding as a game about how people are connected. By far one of the most anticipated PlayStation games is Death Stranding and even with only teasers shown thus far fans like myself are so excited to see Hideo Kojima’s first game since the whole mess with Konami.

1: Beyond Good and Evil 2

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Finally, at No. 1 spot, we have Beyond Good and Evil 2 which is an action-adventure video game being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier. The game will be a prequel taking place a few generations prior to the events of Beyond Good and Evil. We’ll also have more traditional computer role-playing game elements compared to the first game. Players will generate a character that starts the game at the very bottom of the social system. The character can be male or female. As the player completes various tasks it will improve in many attributes and gain spacecraft and crew members which they can also improve over time.

Players will visit planets that have their own societies and by completing tasks on the planets will gain new technologies or other facets to improve their spacecraft. The game will have single-player and cooperative players support. Even as the single-player the player participates in a shared universe with some events affecting all players of the same time. This was long considered to be in development limbo. Ubisoft shocked us with the reveal at the E3. Even though most of us wish for the story to continue forward, I truly feel that something special is being created with this prequel. I believe in the vision that Ubisoft have for this game. Everything we’ve seen and heard thus far makes me believe that this could very much be one of the best open-world games to come.

The next few years for gaming are going to be huge. Expectations and hopes are going to be extremely high. Let’s hope that some of these open-world games that we discussed today like Ubisoft Beyond Good and Evil and Bioware’s new IP Anthem can deliver an unforgettable adventure for us gamers. So these were a few upcoming open world games that I am very excited about. Please do let me know down in the comment section what open-world game are you excited for the most.
