Vivo Apex is a smartphone that caused quite a stir at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. While manufacturers usually took the safe path of mild development ( Samsung ) or presented devices with an appearance similar to the iPhone X ( Asus ), Vivo decided to go ahead and hit the ballpark, actually innovate. The Chinese showed a futuristic smartphone with advanced design and intend to launch it on the market.
The phone was shown at MWC as a concept phone to showcase how to do a bezel-less design the right way. Two years ago Xiaomi another Chinese smartphone maker grabbed the spotlight when it unveiled the Mi Mix. Xiaomi called it a concept phone but actually went on to mass produce the phone. The phone pushed other smartphone manufacturers to reduce the bezels considerably. Now Vivo seems to be taking it a step further by completely eliminating the bezels.
If the information provided by the ItHome is correct, then the Vivo Apex will be the world’s first mass-produced smartphone, which will be equipped with a fingerprint reader built into the screen and at the same time maintaining the highest possible screen-to-body ratio.
We saw the prototypes in Vivo Apex at MWC 2018.Today the smartphone showed up at a conference in China. While the phone was earlier thought of as just a demonstration of the producer’s strength. Now there is a report the phone will actually hit regular sales.
The smartphone has an OLED screen with a diagonal of 5.99 inches. Almost half of its surface is integrated with the fingerprint reader. The ambient and proximity sensors are also placed under the display, but the selfie camera does not fit in. It is mechanically pulled out from the top edge of the smartphone.
There is no earpiece on the device. The sound is generated by the vibrations of the display, which again distinguishes this smartphone from the competition (similar technology was used in the first generation Xiaomi Mi Mix which did not do a great job).
Under the hood, there is Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 845 processors. It is not known exactly how much RAM will support it, nor how much capacity will be the internal memory bones. Vivo Apex is supposed to be a tasty morsel for music lovers – three sound amplifiers and a DAC converter should be a sufficient set for music lovers.
