For most people, search engine optimization (SEO) seems to be a difficult and incomprehensible thing. But all optimization can be reduced to several of the most effective tactics. Below you will find a list of best SEO techniques to boost your website ranking. Share them with your editors and developers to put them into practice and achieve a high ranking of your site in search engines.

On-page SEO is not the only thing you need do to have success in search engine rankings but it is the most important factor in the overall SEO strategy. If your on-page SEO is not up to the mark, no matter how much effort you put into the off-page you won’t make it to the first page of Google search results.

1. Determine the target keywords for each page.

Each page should have only one main keyword. In addition, each keyword should belong to only one page. Strict separation of pages and keywords will help you increase the ranking of these keywords. The keyword must be relevant to the content, supported by the text on the page and relevant to your business.

2. Use target keywords in page names / URLs.

URL or page title is one of the main indicators for search engines when evaluating content. The content of the target keywords in the URL is very well reflected in the page optimization.

For example, if your target keyword phrase is “video games”, then a good URL would look like this: https://www.videogames.com or like this: https://www.techdue.com/video-games/

3. Use target keywords in the first four words of the title tag.

The title tag is located at the top of the browser, not on the main page of your site. This means that it is often not visible to site visitors. Nevertheless, it is extremely important for search engines for two reasons:

1. It is displayed as the title of the page (hence its name) and serves for search engines as an indicator of what keywords are on the page.

2. The title tag is used as the title in the search engines when the page is displayed in the search results, so it is doubly useful if it encourages the user to click on the link.

The first four words of the title tag are most important. They must contain the target keyword, NOT your company name. By the name of the company, your website can still be found, regardless of its location in the title tag, so it’s best to use this valuable place for keywords. If you want the title tag to contain your company name – put it after the keyword, separated from it with the help of “|”.

An example of the title tag for the keyword “video games”: “Video Games| TechDue»

4. The title tag must not exceed 65 characters and must be unique.

Search engines display only the first 65 characters of the title tag in the results. If your title tag is longer, its text will be cut off, and the “extra” characters will be replaced by the ellipsis. Therefore, you should write short and succinctly to fit your message in 65 characters.

In addition, search engines do not like duplicate content (the text that is repeated in different places on the site) and they value unique, original content above all, so you should do everything possible to make the title tag unique. This will help search engines understand that you are not just duplicating the same content throughout the site.

5. Use one H1 tag for page title.

H1, H2, H3 are content design tags that are used in HTML and are responsible for the appearance of text on a page in the browser. Search engines view these tags hierarchically, which helps them determine which content on a page is most important. ‘H1 tag has the highest priority and should be used only once on each page just for the title. Tags H2 and H3 can be put several times for subtitles, image captions, etc.

6. The H1 tag should contain the keyword

After you have placed one H1 tag on each page, make sure that this tag contains the target keyword for this page.

7. The body text must contain the target keyword.

The main text on the page should correspond to what is contained in the URL, the title tag and the headers H1. The target keyword must appear at least 3 to 4 times inside the content of the page, and at least one time in the first paragraph.

8. Write a unique and informative meta description, inserting keywords there

A meta description is a content that users do not see when visiting pages, as it is hidden inside the code. However, search engines often use the description meta tag in displaying search results. This means that the meta description serves more marketing purposes (moving users from search results to your site) than ranking goals (increasing site rankings for a specific keyword).

It is better if the main keywords are at the beginning of the meta description, then they will be highlighted in bold when displayed in the search results, and this will help to increase the conversion rate.

9. Build a network of interlinked pages using targeted keywords.

Another thing you must do is to interlink your website pages that have somewhat similar content. A very common error on websites is the use of the text “Read more” for links. Search engines view link text (anchor text) as an indicator of the content of the page where the link leads. Therefore, it is better to come up with something more specific for the anchor text, for example, “some more video games that you should try” with reference to a page with information about these games.

The bottom line is that you must use linking to help search engines understand which pages are important to which keywords.

10. Use alt-description and subject names of pictures.

Search bots do not know how to read the text embedded in the image, but they can read the alt-description of this image, as well as the name of its file. Both will help you add targeted content to a page and enable your site to appear when searching by pictures. Google Pictures is the fifth largest search engine, so it’s very important that the description of your images is informative enough.

For image file names, stick to a system that fits your development platform and allows you to use good keywords. For example “best-video-games-for-xbox.jpg” is much better as an image name than “sd345.jpg”. It may take a little work, but in return, you will get a good rating in the Google image search.

These were the on-page SEO techniques that you need to apply to your website to make it a good candidate for the first page of the Google search results. But on-page SEO is not enough. You also need to back it up with a good off-page strategy. You can either do it yourself or hire a good SEO expert or an SEO agency.
