Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts (EA), looks at the possibilities to bring the popular game ‘Apex Legends’ to smartphones. This would add a direct competitor to the Play Store and iTunes Store for Fortnite and PUBG Mobile.
EA’s new game Apex Legends now has 25 million players a week after launch. The game was developed by Respawn, the same studio that released the Titanfall games. Apex Legends has become super popular in no time. The game had 10 million players in just 72 hours after it was launched. The Battle Royale game is currently available for free on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but it will probably also be brought to mobile devices soon to better compete with Fortnite and PUBG.
During the presentation of the quarterly earnings, CEO Andrew Wilson said his company wants to bring Apex Legends to Android and iOS devices:
“We are looking at how we can make the game mobile and cross-play over time and I also expect that this game will have tremendous value in Asia. “
How Does The Game Earn Money?
Although Apex Legends is a free game and players have to continue playing the game in order to earn in-game currency so that they can buy and upgrade new cosmetic items for their character, there will, of course, be several ways in which the company will monetize the game in order to earn revenue from it.
For example, EA plans to introduce a direct purchase option that allows players to purchase cosmetic items and new characters. Apex Legends will also offer so-called ‘Apex-packs’ that will be similar to average ‘loot boxes’ that we also know from other games. Players can also collect them over time by playing if they do not want to pay for it.
These revenue generation mechanisms will be added to Apex Legends in the coming months and are likely to be implemented in the mobile game, provided EA decides that the game will generate sufficient revenue to justify the launch. Since the game has so many players in such a short time, we can assume that the game will be profitable enough to be released for smartphones.
