On a tight budget? Looking for an affordable smartphone? You can get a decent smartphone for less than $200 or euros. Today, we list the top 5 smartphones you can buy in 2019 for less than $200.
Best Smartphones Under 200 Euros
Many smartphone manufacturers compete against each other with devices in all sorts of price ranges. Samsung, Nokia, Xiaomi, Huawei (in Europe and Asia), and Oppo are interesting to watch if you do not want to spend too much. Below you will find the top five best smartphones under $200.
Xiaomi Mi A3
Xiaomi is becoming increasingly popular and that makes sense. The Chinese manufacturer is known for its good value for money. The Xiaomi Mi A3 as a 64GB variant is definitely worth a place in this top five.
The device is equipped with Android One, a pure version of the well-known operating system. There is no bloatware or any modifications involved by the manufacturer. You also receive at least three years of updates. By default, the device comes with Android 9.0 (Pie) but is upgradable to Android 10 and Android 11 in the future.
There are three cameras on the back, including the primary 48-megapixel camera. An ultra-wide-angle lens and a depth sensor are also available. Finally, the 32-megapixel front camera lets you shoot great selfies.
The phone offers great processing power featuring a Snapdragon 665 processor built on the 11nm process. The battery is a decent 4030 mAh and therefore provides enough power for more than a day of use.
There is a big 6.1-inch Super AMOLED panel with a 720p resolution. Yes, the resolution is a bit on the low side but what can you expect from a $200 phone. The screen still offers an interesting hidden function. The fingerprint scanner is in fact incorporated in the display. Personally I would have preferred a 1080p resolution with no Under the display fingerprint scanner.
Samsung Galaxy A40
The Samsung Galaxy A40 is a popular device and that makes sense. This smartphone therefore certainly deserves a place on this top list. The phone falls in the popular Galaxy A series from Samsung and is equipped with a large screen.
Thanks to the Super AMOLED panel, colors look nice and the high resolution makes everything nice and sharp. Only a small notch for the front camera provides a small break. If you like watching movies or series, this is a good choice.
If you turn the A40 around you will see a physical fingerprint scanner, which ensures that only you can unlock the device. There are also two cameras, including a wide-angle lens. This way you shoot great pictures for social media, but don’t expect miracles. There is a standard 64 GB storage memory, which can be expanded with a micro-SD memory card.
The processor and battery are not the best on the market, but for this price that makes sense. If you are not going to play heavy 3D games, the power of the Galaxy A40 is sufficient. You can get through the day on a full battery charge and Samsung supplies a fast charger.
If you want better processing power and a battery that lasts longer you should go with the Xiaomi Mi A3. If you want to get a phone with a better display to watch movies and series, you should go with the Galaxy A40.
Motorola Moto G7
The Motorola Moto G7 is another good option. The phone comes with is a big 6.2-inch 1080p IPS display. Yes, there is no OLED panel but the resolution is better than the Mi A3. The resolution is high enough to be able to see every detail of a video, photo or website. There is, however, a small notch at the top incorporating a selfie camera.
The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 632 processor which is a decent processor but inferior to the 665 that comes inside the Mi A3. The processing power is better than Samsung’s offering though.
There are two cameras on the back. A normal 12-megapixel variant and a 5-megapixel lens that measures depth. This allows you to quickly take a photo with a depth-of-field effect. In addition, the subject is sharp, while the background is blurred. A physical fingerprint scanner can also be found on the back. The phone lacks the Ultra-wide camera lens that can be found on the offerings from Samsung and Xiaomi. The overall camera quality is also inferior to the Mi A3 and Galaxy A40.
The battery on this device is 3000mAh which could have been better. The phone does not offer any superiority over the two devices mentioned above except slightly better processing power over the Galaxy A40. So far, the Xiaomi Mi A3 remains my favorite on this list.
Huawei P Smart (2019 Version)
The Huawei P Smart has been on the market for a while, but that has also ensured that the price has since fallen considerably. This device is also a perfect match if you are looking for a decent smartphone for under $200. The processor comes from the company itself and delivers good performance, as long as you don’t play heavy games. There is 64GB of storage memory available and that can be expanded with a memory card.
There is a 1080p 6.21-inch IPS LCD panel onboard. While it’s an IPS LCD panel the resolution is great and the colors are fantastic.. There is a small notch at the top for the 8MP selfie camera. There is a 13MP main camera at the back supported by a 2MP depth sensor. The ultra-wide lens present on the Mi A3 and Galaxy A40 is absent on the P Smart.
We also see a physical fingerprint scanner on the back, headphone jack, and 3400 mAh battery. Huawei delivers this device with Android 9.0 (Pie) wich EMUI 9 shell on top of it. The expectation is that the device will get an update to Android 10 anyway.
The device falls between the Samsung Galaxy A40 and the Moto G7.
The next on this list the Nokia 4.2. Nokia offers only devices with a pure version of Android. This 4.2 is also equipped with Android One, a reason why you should definitely consider this smartphone. That’s probably the only reason to get this device.
The device was released in May of 2019 for a suggested retail price of $199. In the meantime, however, the price has dropped by a few dollars making it an interesting choice.
There is a 5.7 inch IPS panel with a lower 720p resolution. Another disadvantage of this Nokia 4.2 is the presence of an old-fashioned micro-USB port. Plus points include NFC, the headphone jack and fingerprint scanner on the back. There are two cameras of 13 and 2 megapixels, with which you can also take portrait photos.
The processor on this device is the weakest of all. It is powered by a Snapdragon 439 chipset built on the 12nm process. So, don’t expect it to run high-end games smoothly, but using applications such as Netflix, Instagram or Spotify listening to music is no problem. Other great features of this device are the physical Google Assistant button and face recognition. So you don’t necessarily have to use the fingerprint scanner to quickly unlock the device.
Overall the Xiaomi Mi A3 is our favorite on this list with decent processing power, a great battery and versatile camera setup with decent image quality. It also offers the best battery time of the 5 smartphones that we have mentioned in this list.
