Why Should You Use A VPN?
- It prevents even your internet service provider from seeing which websites you are surfing on the internet. So he cannot give out such information to anyone or lose it due to a data leak.
- The servers you exchange data with do not know your real IP address and can not identify your identity based on the connection.
- The data transfered through a VPN is encrypted and secure against eavesdropping.
- You can bypass any geo-blocking, so you have access to videos and other content that is not available in your country without a VPN (or proxy).
The Top 5 Best VPN Apps For Android
To make your privacy protected while surfing the internet online I have gathered 5 of the best VPN apps for Android. These apps not only make sure that your privacy remains protected while surfing the internet but also make you able to access blocked websites and apps in your region.
VPN Pass is a new VPN app on the Google Play store with some very promising security features. The best thing about this VPN is that it is completely free without any data or device limit. The app generates it’s revenue through ads which might not be an ideal option for some.
If you don’t care about the ads and are just looking for a free solution to create a secure connection to the internet this is the app for you. The App is quite easy to use and you can go anonymous with just one touch of a button. You can also select from a number of different servers.
The app promises to maintain no logs so you should have a peace of mind without any worry of losing your private data. VPN Pass does not even require you to register in order to make use of the app. you can go anonymous on one touch of a button.
VPN Pass Speed Test
The speed of VPN Pass does not come close to that of the paid counterparts such as ExpressVPN, but it is
certainly not bad with a download rate of over 17 megabits per second and an upload rate of just under 8 megabits per second.
Only the ping time of 50ms gives slight cause for criticism and could possibly lead to problems when playing real-time games.
VPN Pass: Conclusion
Despite the fact that it is a free app, it offers amazing performance. The app offers a clear and easy-to-use interface. The download and upload speeds with activated VPN are still very good and leave nothing to be desired.
The only thing I want the app to improve is the presentation of the app. It certainly does not look good to the eye with bad design choices.
After installing it on the Google Play Store and logging in, you have a very clear interface.
There you can select the server location and the server you want to connect to using the LOCAL SELECTION button.
If you are looking for the currently fastest server or want to know the ping times of the service, You can check this via the stopwatch in the upper right corner. ExpressVPN then pings all available servers and displays their response times in the overview.
If you have finally decided on a server, you can select it from the list. It also appears on the home screen as a selected server. To set up the connection, you then only have to press the connect button and the app automatically establishes a connection.
The other setting options are very manageable within the app. You still have the option of choosing the VPN protocol. At this point you have 3 options: UPD is the best choice in terms of speed and safety. TCP is the choice if UDP does not work. The default is the value Automatic, where ExpressVPN makes the selection itself.
In addition, you can also decide in the settings how you want to use the VPN client: either permanently, as soon as your Android restarts or only when needed.
ExpressVPN – Speed measurement
To determine the maximum speed, I chose the server that was automatically suggested. With the VPN enabled, the Speedtest app achieved a download speed of around 51 megabits and an upload speed of around 9 megabits per second. This is by far the best value achieved in the entire test.
Just like the desktop version, the ExpressVPN also impresses on Android. The app offers a clear and easy-to-use interface. The throughput with activated VPN is still very good and leaves nothing to be desired.
Only in the setting options, I would have liked a little more options. In the end, however, the functionality is convincing: Netflix and other services work without any problems. A service that leaves only a few wishes unfulfilled.
NordVPN: Best Cheap Android VPN
In addition to ExpressVPN, NordVPN also has a great desktop version and impresses its users by sophisticated encryption technology, 100% anonymity, and an intuitive user interface.
With correspondingly high expectations, I went to the test of the Android App. When you open the app you seen different servers presented on various locations on a Map of Europe.
You can either select a server directly from the map by clicking on the corresponding icon or you can use the list view as an alternative.
NordVPN – features and ease of use
At this point you will also find some interesting server categories which you cannot find in any other VPN app . I have compared the individual functions of the servers in the following table.
|P2P||Optimized servers if peer-to-peer networks |
experience frequent crashes.
|Onion over VPN||Traffic is first routed through a VPN server from NordVPN, |
then into the Onion network and then to your desired
destination on the Internet. You do not need a special
Onion client in this case.
|Double VPN||Traffic is first routed through two NordVPN servers |
before the requested address is accessed on the Internet.
|Anti DDoS||The server is recommended if VPN connection is aborted|
|Dedicated IP||Paid special function. You can get your own IP address, |
with which you always go to the Internet. This costs $ 70 per year.
In addition to the selection of a special server for special applications, NordVPN also offers numerous additional functions in the settings.
The CyberSec function is very helpful for securing your smartphone. When enabled, NordVPN will automatically filter ads and protect you from suspicious websites and insecure internet connections. You should always enable this option if you use NordVPN.
If you have problems when setting up a VPN tunnel within a country, the function “Disguised Server” also activates. In this case, NordVPN tries to switch to alternative servers in order to avoid certain country restrictions, such as in Turkey or in China.
If only an unstable connection is established with the default settings and the VPN tunnel is interrupted again and again, the change from UDP to TCP could also help you.
The TCP protocol brings a bit more stability, but it’s a bit slower. This is particularly noticeable when streaming and downloading.
For NordVPN there are two possible modes of operation: either you turn on the VPN when you need it or you use it for every Wi-Fi connection.
So that you do not unnecessarily build a VPN tunnel in secure networks, you can also add networks, such as your home WLAN, to an exception list.
When you have finally selected the correct server location and connection parameters, you can enable the connection via the flash at the bottom of the screen.
NordVPN – Speed Test
The speed of NordVPN comes closest to the front-runner, ExpressVPN, and is in second place among the test candidates with a download rate of over 42 megabits per second and an upload rate of just under 11 megabits per second.
Only the ping time of 40ms gives slight cause for criticism and could possibly lead to problems when playing real-time games.
The provider NordVPN is one of my favorites. It offers an easy-to-use interface, but also has many features integrated that leave nothing to be desired even for experienced and demanding users. This goes from the special P2P server to the filtering of insecure content.
After the start of the VPN client on Android, I first asked myself if I already use the client or still see advertising.
On a total of 4 pages with photos as background, you can learn more about the topics WLAN, streaming, anonymous surfing and the choice of your own server. In the case of WLAN and anonymous surfing, you can even directly define settings for the behavior of CyberGhost at this point.
CyberGhost – Features and Usability
CyberGhost features and functionality is nothing short of what the other competitors are offering. Only the arrangement of the individual parameters has room for improvement. You can use the home page Auto Wi-Fi Protection and the Options button to set whether to block websites tracking your habits.
Also in this menu you also enable protection against malicious content and websites.
The remaining parameters around the WLAN security can be found within the Settings menu. At this point, there is an Auto Wi-Fi Protection section where you can enable the Hotspot Protection feature.
This warns you if you are trying to connect to a previously unknown WLAN.
CyberGhost distinguishes between a protected and an open WLAN. The possible actions do not differ for both groups. You can start the connection automatically, stop automatically, do nothing or CyberGhost asks you every time, what you want to do on this WLAN. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you can explicitly set how CyberGhost should behave.
The selection of the country, with which you want to connect, can be found behind the menu item Anonymous surfing and the associated options.
At this point you select the server location. In the case of automatic selection, the fastest server is always used. Alternatively, you can, of course, choose the desired one from the list of over 40 servers from 30 countries.
CyberGhost Speed Test
For our speed test, I have again used the automatic selection of the VPN app and have done so with the speed test measurements.
Unfortunately, CyberGhost could not convince in the speed test: the download rate was never over 17 megabits per second. The upload rate was almost 11 megabits per second.
The VPN client offers good functionality and also convinces in the area of security. A little confusing, however, is the arrangement of the adjustment options. These are distributed on the one hand in the options of the function descriptions and, moreover, in the settings.
This sometimes requires unnecessary clicks until you land at the desired destination. However, CyberGhost was the most disappointing in terms of download rate. Here, the provider takes by far the last place.
Android VPN for free: Tunnelbear
The only candidate besides VPN Pass to offer you a permanently free VPN offer is the Canadian Tunnelbear solution. As the name suggests, the bear, which already appears in the app’s logo, plays a key role.
The provider gives you 500 megabytes of free data transfer per month (Yes, that’s the catch). You can even extend this by tweeting about the service and installing the desktop version and recruiting friends once by 1000 megabytes.
Tunnelbear – features and ease of use
The interface of Tunnelbear is designed especially for users who do not want to deal with the technology. You see the map of Europe and a bear waiting to dig a tunnel on the entry screen.
If you want to select a server outside of Europe, you can either move the map in the appropriate direction or you can make it comfortable and select the country from the list at the bottom of the screen.
In both cases, Tunnelbear asks you again if you want to build the VPN tunnel to this destination and if your answer is yes, the bear digs a tunnel to the finish. Once the connection is established, the bear looks out of the tunnel at the destination.
If any apps on your smartphone do not tolerate the VPN tunnel, you can also exclude them with the help of the shared bear. In this case, these apps bypass the existing VPN tunnel and communicate directly with the Internet.
Tunnelbear Speed Test
In the speed tests, Tunnelbear unfortunately finds itself in the rear seats. Despite the automatic selection of the server, which ended in Germany, the download rate could not convince.
Tunnelbear managed just over 20 megabits per second at this point, taking the penultimate place just ahead of CyberGhost. At this point, the provider should urgently improve. Then nothing stands in the way of one of the front seats.
In terms of usability and ease of use, the Tunnelbear is my clear favorite. Thanks to the 500-megabyte free download, the service is also suitable for occasional users who need a secure connection every now and then.
A bit of a pity is the weak download performance, which is only slightly faster than in the case of CyberGhost.
Single test: VyprVPN
The final candidate in the test is VyprVPN . This service comes from Switzerland and has been well established in the last 10 years since it became available on the market. During this time, the service has been constantly evolving and has today, in addition to the pure VPN functionality, additional components that protect you while surfing.
Compared to most of its competitors, the price model of VyprVPN is based not on the duration of the contract but on the functionality.
You can only use the full range of services if you subscribe to the premium service. It offers a higher number of parallel devices in use, a cloud feature and an additional connection protocol.
VyprVPN – Features And Ease Of Use
The developers of VyprVPN have packed most of the features on the homepage. On this you select the server that you want to use. In addition, you will also find here the most important additional functions that VyprVPN brings with it.
You can choose in the general settings, if you want to start VyprVPN automatically. There are different options available: from the start of the smartphone to the launch of the VyprVPN app. Of course, you can define and enable exceptions for secure WLANs.
If you do not want a general start, but nevertheless want to be optimally protected, you can prevent the connection from being established over non-trusted WLAN networks. So you do not accidentally connect automatically to an open WLAN.
A very useful backup feature is the blocking of malicious pages. If you enable them, VyprVPN will check for malware prior to displaying the page.
Also interesting is the function “kill switch”. If you have activated this, only a connection to the Internet can be established if VyprVPN is activated and a VPN tunnel exists.
Within the premium version of the service you have an alternative protocol available. This is called Chameleon and offers a 256-bit encryption.
As the name suggests, the protocol attempts to obfuscate the VPN tunnel as much as possible in order to deceive both streaming services and prevent the blockage of a tunnel.
You can always choose the fastest server at VyprVPN via the option of the same name. This is currently determined by the response times of the individual installations. This was also the basis for our measurements.
In terms of download speed, VyprVPN was able to score fully and is at the forefront with a download rate of 40 megabits per second.
A little disappointing, however, is the ping speed of 37 milliseconds. You may already be having problems with online games here.
The Swiss provider Golden Frog delivers a powerful, intuitive service with VyprVPN. This offers not only good download rates but also a number of additional features that help especially when hiding the VPN.
Once the provider gets his bad ping times under control, he becomes a serious competitor for ExpressVPN.
The first-placed ExpressVPN convinces on the whole line: not only the speed but also the user-friendliness and the functionality convince. If you want to choose your server for the purpose, I recommend a closer look at the NordVPN app. If you are looking for a free VPN service without any data limits, we strongly advise using VPN Pass.
In addition to the server locations, you can also choose the optimal server for P2P or secure surfing in the Onion network. But the data transfer rate is not quite as fast as with ExpressVPN – but in normal everyday life, you will hardly notice any differences.
The service package from VyprVPN is also impressive. The ease of use and the features convince, only the ping times give a reason for criticism. While streaming and downloading files, you probably will not notice this, but playing online games could cause problems.
Slightly beaten off are the other two services Tunnelbear and CyberGhost. Above all, they let their points in the speed test and are at the end of about 20 megabits per second behind the competitors. These are worthwhile only if you do not plan major downloads. When UHD streaming from abroad, you may come up against the performance limits of the services.
