Best Classic Retro Games of The ’90s Now on Android & iOS
In total, there are 15 of them in our collection. For each game, there is a description along with gameplay footage. You can easily download these game from the widgets below each entry.
Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic
The light music, the rattling of the roller-coaster and the cheering of the virtual crowd bring sheer joy for those who have played this game in their childhood. The smartphone version is a mix of the first two and thus best parts of the Rollercoaster Tycoon series. The controls have been adapted for the touch operation.
Unfortunately, the game is not available on the Play Store right now. Maybe it is available on some servers but I couldn’t find it on the Play Store. I have included a link to the APK file hosted on APKmirror.
For those who don’t trust installing Apps from third-party sites can download RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile from the Play Store. It is quite similar to the classic version. There is also another version available with improved graphics named RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch
Hello everyone from 1987! After 26 years, the legendary Contra was reborn in the Android ecosystem. If you do not know what it is about, let me remind you. The game’s events unfold in the jungles of South America, where you must find a powerful gun and eliminate as many newcomers as possible.
The gameplay of the Android version is not much different from the original, although there are some nuances. The game has been removed from the Play Store for some reason. However, I have included a link to the APK file below from where you can download the game.
The Secret of Monkey Island
The point and click classic is the first part of the popular series about the sympathetic hero Guybrush Threepwood (pirate!). He has to prove himself to the pirate leaders. The hero falls in love with Elaine and meets his biggest enemy Le Chuck.
The adventure is full of weird humor and puzzles that you have to think of more than once around the corner. Bring the grog!
The app is not available on Android, however, you can find a similar game (ScummVM) on Android which is also fun to play.
I still remember me playing Blazing Star in the arcades for hours not long ago (Yeah! just 16 years ago). It was one of the best-looking shoot’em’up games of its time. I had forgotten this game until I first saw its screenshots on the Play Store.
This is a fast-paced flying shooter game in which you shoot down powerful enemies with different kinds of weapons.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The blue hedgehog Sonic races from level to level and collects golden rings at top speed. Sega offers a variety of reworked and new on-the-go adventures. Many of the manufacturer’s most successful games are as much fun today as it was back in the ’90s. The simple touch controls make it fairly easy to lead Sonic in the fight against Dr. Robotnik.
The arcade game Dragon’s Lair was a revolution. Players had to intervene at the right time to navigate through the interactive animated cartoon animated by Disney illustrator Don Bluth. The edition for the 30th anniversary of the game, released for the first time in 1983, is still today a special gem, especially on tablets.
As a “Super Mario Bros” clone, the platformer Giana Sisters (or The Great Giana Sisters, as it was officially called) became a favorite among players. The little Giana has to be navigated through her nightmare. In search of her sister Maria, she has to defeat some monsters in order to be awakened. Originally developed for the Commodore 64, Giana found her way onto numerous platforms including the smartphones.
iOS version Android version
Ritter Arthur goes back to the search for the princess in mobile execution. Zombies, ghosts, and demons, however, do not make it easy for him to free his beloved from the clutches of Satan. Apart from the optimized control for the smartphone, little has changed. The arcade game is just as fun today as it was then.
R-Type is a classic shoot, em up! originally from 1987 in the side-scrolling shooter genre, developed by Irem for slot machines. In its day, one of the most popular arcade games, it will still captivate you today. R-Type is a side scroll as it has been on arcades. The game takes you down the memory lane to fly that awesome jet and shoot hordes of enemy aircrafts.
Hugo Retro Mania
Anyone who had cable television in the 90s knows all about Hugo through the TV show, in which he had to be navigated through a mine. The new edition for smartphones has received a major overhaul, but follows the well-tried principle Dodge and collect.
Metal Slug X
Another game from SNK, the developer behind Blazing Star. Just like Blazing Star, Metal Slug 2 was another of my favorite from the days of arcades. And I wasn’t the only one in love with it.
Metal Slug X is a remake of the Metal Slug X with a few improvements over the original one. The game has been optimized for touch controls. There are a few other titles from the Metal Slug series available on Android which you might also want to try.
Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded
Anyone who has played video games in puberty could hardly get past Larry. The goal of the game is to try to seduce women. A Kickstarter campaign breathed new life into the game that caused a sensation in the 80s. The reissue has now also found its way onto smartphones and Larry can once again go in search of the “true love”.
Baphomets Fluch: Director’s Cut
The detective game of Nico Collard and George Stobbard has now received five offshoots, all of which have appeared on the smartphone. Especially the first part is still an exciting and tricky adventure game today.
The Director’s Cut added some scenes and puzzles to the original game and adapted the controls to current standards. The original game had an unexpectedly high degree of difficulty (due to a design flaw). This made the puzzles unsolvable for many. The mistake has now been resolved, but it is still difficult.
Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde get ready. The four ghosts chase Ms. Pac-Man through the maze in one of the most popular arcade classics of all time.
Also on the smartphone, the game has lost nothing and is demanding and captivating at the same time. Pac-Man is also found in numerous versions for mobile devices.
Prince of Persia Classic HD
One of my favorite games from the past. Prince of Persia Classic has also made its way to Android & iOS with improved graphics. Your task is simple i.e fight your way through the dungeons of the palace and save the princess. But you only have 60 minutes, after that, it is lost forever.
