OPPO Find X is the most futuristic phone we have ever seen with a unique and elegant design. The phone comes with almost 93% screen-to-body ratio and hidden cameras. The phone’s entire top pops up to reveal the front as well the back cameras.
A few days ago OPPO, the Chinese smartphone giant presented the latest flagship model in the Find series after more than two years. I have never felt so excited by a phone launch before and I have never been an OPPO fan until now. Yes, there are concerns about how long can the motorized top withstand the everyday use, but I would happily take that chance considering how cool this phone is.
Design and Display
The Oppo Find X is equipped with a 6.4-inch OLED display (made by Samsung) and 1080p resolution. Oppo declares that the screen-to-body ratio for this model is 92.25 %. For comparison: Essential Phone (5.71 inches – 84.9%), Vivo NEX (6.59 inches – 91.2%), Xiaomi Mi Mix (6.4 inches – 83.6%), iPhone X (5 , 8 inches – 82.9%). Last week the Vivo NEX knocked the Essential Phone off the throne, the Find X now beats the NEX. The screen also has curved edges which show strong similarities with the Samsung Galaxy S9.
As you can clearly see the materials included in this article, you can not see the selfie camera anywhere. It does not mean that it is not there.
The phone not only has the selfie camera at the top but also a number of other sensors including a 3D dot projector. So, why can’t we see those sensors? Because OPPO has made them hidden inside the top of the phone body. The Cameras and the other sensors appear magically when you open the camera app or try to unlock the device. OPPO has managed to that by making the top of the phone retractable with a motorized mechanism.
The phone has no fingerprint scanner which is one of the few cons that I think the phone has. The phone makes up for it by including a facial recognition system similar to the Apple iPhone X. It uses a flood illuminator, an infrared camera, proximity sensor, dot projector, a regular RGB camera to make the facial recognition system as faster and as secure as possible.
What you do is that you swipe up, the whole top with all the sensors, it grabs your face and hides immediately inside the shell. What is incredible is that it takes just half a second to go up and recognize your face and then takes another half second go to down.
If you look at the phone, you will find no visible cameras. If you start the camera app on the Find X, the top back of the device will slide upwards and the front cam with 25 megapixels can be seen immediately. The dual camera system (with 16 and 20MP cameras)on the back of the device is also hidden inside the extendable part.
The dual camera system on the back does have OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), however, we are not sure if both the cameras have OIS or just a single camera. I am not too excited about the camera quality of the OPPO Find X as OPPO does not have a good reputation in that department.
What’s Under the Hood?
The phone is powered by the Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor with a whopping 8GB Memory and 256GB of Internal storage. The phone draws current from a 3730 mAh battery which is a decent amount of power for such a huge and powerful phone. The battery supports VOOC fast charging. The phone also supports two SIMs at a time which is quite a handy solution for those who are bound to two networks. On the software side, the phone comes with a heavily skinned version of the Android 8.1 Oreo.
There are very few cons in this phone the main one for me is no wireless charging despite the glass back design. There is no water resistance due to the movable parts, but I can live with that. My biggest concern with this phone is the camera. I have not tested the camera myself but OPPO is not known to have great cameras and those who have tested the device are not very much impressed by the camera. Another concern about the movable parts is that you cannot protect the device with a protective case but who will want to hide such a beauty with an ugly protective case.
According to Oppo, this will be the first Oppo device to come to North America and Europe but for now, the Oppo Find X is only available in China.
