Startups like OnePlus, Essential and Razer can succeed most of the time, but in one department they have not been able to compete with the giants and that is the camera.
It’s not enough to choose a good sensor only, as the camera software is also very important. Yes, a great sensor is necessary for optimal image performance but a great image sensor is no good if the camera software and the post-processing are not great. A great example of this is Sony. Sony creates amazing camera sensors, most of other smartphone manufacturers use Sony Camera Sensors on their phones including Samsung and Google. And while Samsung’s Galaxy Phones and Google’s Pixel phones provide amazing pictures, Sony’s own smartphones suffer from inferior photo quality. The issue is not with their sensor the issue is their software.
Apple has a team of 800 people working on the iPhone’s camera. Essential Phone received criticism for camera performance, and just recently launched Razer Phone. The camera of the aforementioned device has been continuously improved through updates, and now Razer Phone has also received several camera updates. Unlike the Essential phone, Razer phone does not have a bad camera but it isn’t great either.
Today Razer phone got a new update aimed at improving the camera performance. The new update adds no new features to the phone’s camera. The update improves performance and fixes a few bugs. Razer also has the Android 8 Oreo update in the works. Razer CEO Ming-Liang Tan promised that Oreo update will also bring portrait mode to Razer phone along with 60FPS video. The future update checklist also includes a button for instantly zooming in on a subject and 4x slow-motion video recording.
If you have a Razer phone, please let us know in the comments if you see any big performance gain in the camera by the latest update.
