19Update January 26: First images leaked
In a month, Samsung will show off their new mobiles Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. But already, super leak Evan Blass at Venturebeat has published what is said to be the first press renders of the upcoming flagship.
Based on the images, the smartphones look like their predecessor Samsung Galaxy S8 complete with bezel-less screen and Bixby button. The bezels has been modified. The side bezels have gone wider while the top and bottom bezels have been slightly reduced.
So far, there are no renders of the back of the mobile phone except the third party renders by onleaks which seems to be the real thing. Venturebeat, on the other hand, writes that the fingerprint reader is now positioned under the camera rather than next to the one on the S8.
Earlier, we wrote that Samsung’s upcoming tricks would probably appear on February 26th. After the company has now sent an official invitation to the launch (which we of course attend), we know that it is a day earlier that applies. On February 25, that’s about exactly a month, it’s finally time.

The event takes place the same day as the Mobile World Congress, MWC, begins in Barcelona. This giant fair will, of course, offer more launches, but just Samsung learn to draw the most attention. The invitation displays a huge ‘9’ which refers to the S9 and the words “The Camera. Reimagined”, which clearly reveals what the Korean mobile manufacturer chooses to focus on in this year’s Galaxy models.
Samsung also announces that the launch will be live broadcast on samsung.com.
Earlier Evan Blass tweeted that the pre-orders will start on March 1 and the phone will start shipping on March 16.
We have also seen an alleged Samsung Galaxy S9 box in pictures which gives us an idea of the possible specs.
From the text on the carton we can see the following specifications:
- Amoled screen of 5.8 inches (quad HD)
- Cameras of 12 and 8 megapixels respectively
- Support for Super Slow Motion
- Storage space of 64 gigabytes
- 4Gigabyte workload
- Eye recognition
- IP68 marking for water and dust resistance
- Stereo speakers and headphones “tuned by AKG”
- Support for wireless charging
What matters most is support for Super Slow Motion. According to unconfirmed data, it is a thousand frames per second, which compares to 960 for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium.
The phone main camera will variable aperture ranging from f / 2.4 and f / 1.5, where the latter will give better images in low light.
Galaxy S9: Design
With the S8 and S8 Plus, Samsung grabbed a lot of attention thanks to its 18: 9 screen, which was characterized by really thin edges. Should we believe the rumor, Samsung will stick to this recipe. Evan Blass believes that the Korean phone manufacturer is focused on performance improvements instead of innovative design this year (the design is already quite amazing). The only change in design this year may be that the edges of the top and bottom edge of the upcoming phones will be even thinner than before.
However, we are expecting a couple of changes on the back of the phone. One of the things that the S8 models were criticized for was the fingerprint reader, which was placed next to the camera. This year, Samsung is thinking of changing this with S9 putting the fingerprint scanner under the camera.
One or two new colors can also be talked about. Sammobile recently reported that S9 will be available in the classic black, gold and blue variants – while a dark design is rumored to replace the gray selection.
Galaxy S9: Specifications and Operating System
A second confirmed news is that the Galaxy S9 will be powered by the brand new Snapdragon 845 chip. This is a regular follow-up to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chip that sits in many of the 2017 flagship phones.
A new Snapdragon chip often provides significant improvements in speed and energy efficiency, but in the 845 there is also a dedicated AI chip that is expected to make Samsung’s mobile assistant Bixby more useful. There are also several important security improvements in mobile payments and biometrics, which together with Samsung’s own Knox system will make the Galaxy S9 even safer than the S8.
Samsung has also revealed that they are working on a chip with 512 gigabytes of storage capacity, but it is not likely that this will make it to in the S9 phones.
When it comes to operating systems, there is already a beta version of Oreo-based Samsung Experience 9.0 “on the market”. We are sure that this is the operating system that ends up in the final S9 phones.
Galaxy S9: Features
Many rumors argue that Samsung does not plan a deep-sighted Face ID-like feature in its S9 mobiles, but can very well upgrade the skills in 2d face scanning. The Korea Herald states that Samsung is going to upgrade the megapixel count from 2 to 3 on its iris scanner. In that case, it would make the next phones better recognize your irises even when wearing glasses or in low-light environments.
Galaxy S9: Camera
Samsung debuted the dual camera setup with the Note 8 and it is a great success. The phone captures amazing photos. The dual-camera setup not only provides optical zoom but also captures amazing portrait photos.
The Galaxy S9 will be equipped with a single camera with a resolution of 12 Mpix with OIS (optical image stabilization) and variable aperture – the user will be able to select the value f / 2.4 or f / 1.5. Galaxy S9 + will receive a module consisting of two “eyes”. The first one has to be the same as in the model without the “Plus” in the name, the second one has to have a resolution of 12 Mpix, aperture f / 2.4 and OIS (optical image stabilization).
There are also rumors suggesting that both the phones will be recording video at 960f/s at Full HD resolution. The front camera is rumored to be 8MP with f/1.7 aperture.
This is all we know right now. We will add new updates at the top of this article as we know more about the phone, stay tuned!
