Vivo has finally officially presented the truly bezel-less VIVO NEX and VIVO NEX S models, which not only look phenomenal but also offer a whole lot of innovative solutions. The phone has used every imaginable technique to create the highest screen-to-body ratio (so far).
Earlier at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), Vivo showed us an exciting concept phone called Vivo Apex with a crazy screen-to-body ratio. Since it was just a concept phone the overall design was blocky and not very much ergonomic and comfortable to hold. Now, Vivo has announced a refined and rebranded version of that device with a more ergonomic design. The device has been named VIVO NEX and will be available for masses to purchase but at a very hefty price.
VIVO NEX Display and Design
The phone comes with a 6.59-inch, FHD + Super AMOLED screen with a ratio of 19.3: 9 dethroning the Essential Phone as the phone with the largest screen-to-body ratio ever. With 91.2% screen-to-body ratio, the VIVO NEX has crushed the old record of 84.9%. The best part is that Vivo did not include an ugly notch to attain such a crazy screen-to-body ratio, instead, it went for a retractable selfie camera that hides inside the phone’s body.
The top bezel is just 2.16mm thick. The 8MP camera slides up in just over a second when you want to take a selfie. The motor that controls the camera should be durable enough to push the camera out for approximately 50,000 times without any issues.
Vivo has decided to go the Xiaomi way when it comes to the earpiece. They have used a screen SoundCasting technology which makes the screen vibrate to deliver sound. Vivo states that the sound from this speaker sounds better than that of the competition. He has a more powerful bass and also the treble sounds ‘smoother’, says Vivo.
Vivo has featured the fingerprint scanner under the display in the VIVO NEX S while the regular VIVO NEX has a conventional fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. While the fingerprint reader under the display is a nice novelty, I prefer a conventional fingerprint scanner on the back as it is faster and more secure.
The back of the VIVO NEX is made of glass and a technique has been applied that Vivo called “Holographic Diffraction Dynamic Color”. Thousands of light-reflecting dots have been placed to ensure that the light is reflected in every angle. This creates a unique and beautiful effect. The existing dual cameras have 12MP and 5MP and can take better pictures in low light due to the ‘4-axis OIS’. The technique ensures that you capture sharp photos without much noise.
The dual camera module looks more like the Huawei P20 than the iPhone X.
VIVO NEX Specifications
Under all this visual excellence there is capable hardware that will make sure a smooth performance. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset is supported by 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. There is also a variant available with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 4000 mAh battery will ensure a decent battery life. Furthermore, thanks to Vivo for retaining the headphone jack.
The VIVO NEX comes with the latest version of Android 8.1 Oreo Vivo’s Funtouch OS 4.0 on top of it. The phone also comes with a dedicated AI-guided assistant ‘Jovi’ with which you can start applications and recognize images, similar to the Bixby assistant from Samsung.
