Jonathan (Jony) Ive is head of design at Apple who designed the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and various other Apple products. Ive will leave Apple in 2019 to set up its own design company but will continue to work for Apple.
Jonathan Paul Ive, as Apple’s main designer, is responsible for all product design at Apple. In addition to all kinds of Apple products, he also determined the design of the updated Apple Stores and Apple’s headquarters. Jony (pronounced ‘Johnny’) Ive has been working at Apple since 1992 but will leave in the course of 2019 to set up his own design studio. Until then he will remain Chief Design Officer.
Jonathan Ive’s Work At Apple
Ive’s career began with Tangerine, a design agency of which he was one of the founders. He designed a toilet with an accompanying sink for a customer, but the designs were rejected because they were too expensive to produce.
Ive was hired by Apple in 1992 as a consultant, after which he got a permanent job. Ive soon considered leaving Apple again, but then Apple CEO Jon Rubinstein managed to convince him to stay with the company with a salary increase and the promise that they would make history.
Ive joined Apple in the period that Steve Jobs was not with the company. Only in 1997 would Jobs return to Apple. In the same year, Ive became Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, which meant that he became responsible for all hardware designs at Apple. In 2015, Ive was promoted to Chief Design Officer.
Ive’s first assignment in his new job was the design of the iMac G3 – a colorful Mac computer announced in 1998 that heralded a change in Apple’s product strategy. Since the iMac, Ive has been involved in the design of Apple’s all major products, including the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Since Tim Cook has taken the helm at Apple, Jonathan Ive has regularly been seen in interviews. Below you can see an interview from 2014 in which Ive talks about his design activities:
Source Of Inspiration: Dieter Rams
Jonathan Ive has repeatedly said in the past that industrial designer Dieter Rams is one of his major sources of inspiration.
Rams was a chief designer at Braun from the 1960s to 1995. You can clearly see the hand of Rams in some Ive designs. For example, the Podcast app for iOS initially looked very much like a tape recorder designed by Rams .
Rams seem to have no problem that Apple seeks inspiration in its designs. The Braun designer sees it as a compliment and says that according to him there are few companies such as Apple that really understand good design. Rams has a lot of respect for Ive, since his products convince people to stand in line. He has never succeeded at Braun. Jonathan Ive wrote the preface to “Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible“, a book about the famous Braun designer.
Rival: Scott Forstall
In October 2012, iOS chief Scott Forstall left Apple after fierce criticism of Apple Maps . Forstall was responsible for the design of iOS and was known as a difficult man. After leaving Forstall, Jonathan Ive was given a broader job description: he was also responsible for the design of all software. Ive provided a completely new design for iOS 7, which completely eliminated Forstall’s skeuomorphism. All software for iOS and OS X has since been provided with a new, flatter look.
Early Life Of Jony Ive
Jonathan Ive was born on February 27, 1967 in Chingford (near London) and went to high school in Stafford. He then studied at Newcastle Polytechnic, nowadays called Northumbria University. During his studies he specialized in industrial design. According to a professor, Ive already designed clocks and mobile phones at the time.
Ive’s interest in design was not unexpected. His father, Mike Ive, was a silversmith by trade and gave design lessons at a nearby school. In an interview, Ive states that his father was one of his major sources of inspiration.
